Like everyone else, I had seen those advertisements for trade schools during daytime television once or twice, but like many people, I had never thought twice about them. After all, I have a college degree -- what did I need with a trade school? Then again, times are getting pretty tough for me. I got a liberal arts major -- something that a generation ago would have guaranteed me a life of lucrative career opportunities. Nowadays, however, it was all but useless. I was always seriously underpaid, and scarcely able to keep up with my college loan payments. Pretty desperate for money, I decided that I would give it a shot. After all, what did I have to lose by taking a couple classes at a trade school.
It turns out that I had nothing to lose, and quite a bit to gain. I found a technical school that specialized in electronics and computer science. Although I did not study these fields in college, I always had a knack for computers. I figured that it wasn't too late to get a start in electronics. It turns out that I was right. I did very well in my classes and, with a little effort, I was soon approaching graduation. Although it was difficult going to trade school program while working, it was manageable. The best thing about the technical school, however, wasn't the training. It was the fact that they helped place me in a job afterwards. You see, the economy has been pretty bad lately, so a trade school that offers career placement is definitely preferable to one without it. It turns out that the very first position I was placed in was quite satisfying. I was making good money, enjoying the work I was doing, and advancing quickly through the ranks. I don't think that I will stay here forever, but it's a good place to be for the next couple of years. Actually, the trade school got me thinking. Having a technical degree in computer science is great, but getting a four year degree in it would be even better. With the credits all I already have, I can probably get a bachelors in computer science rather quickly. After that, I could make even more money. It is not how I planned on spending my life, but I really am enjoying it. Who knows where it will take me in the long run.
