Political Campaign Strategies
When most people think about political campaign strategies, they think about the dirty aspects. Political campaigns can be extremely cut-throat affairs as anyone familiar with American politics knows. What people don't realize is that the mudslinging and ruthlessness is only one aspect. Political strategies involve a lot more than digging up dirt on your opponents. The most important thing to devising a political campaign strategy is having the right information. No matter what kind of political campaign you are running – be it student council, local office, or presidential – you need to know what the voters think and what they want. The phrase knowledge is power has never been more true than it is in politics. Another thing that you have to keep in mind is your message. Political campaign advertisements intentionally look scattershot, but they aren't. Everything about a political advertisement – the music played, the way the candidate looks, the people interviewed, the tone of voice of the announcer – is carefully calculated to give an image. With Barack Obama, for example, the crucial image is that of a grassroots phenomenon, unstoppable because he is the voice of the people. With more conservative politicians, there is more of a Gothic American message conveyed. Sometimes there is a xenophobic undertone, whereas other times there is a strong statement of acceptance of differences. One of the biggest problem with political campaign strategies nowadays is that every second is plagued by scandal mongers. The press are always eager to report on the slightest slip up, and political candidates are watched 24 hours a day. Something that a candidate says to a small group of people in Oklahoma will be on the front page of the paper is in New York and Chicago the next morning. This takes an already tense situation and makes it even worse. After all, it is well-known that one wrong statement can sometimes ruin a political career. Of course, you can't afford to ignore the basics of political campaign strategies either – namely, moral tone. No matter what people say about rising above it, there is little reason to do this. The most effective political campaign strategy, as a matter of fact, is to look like you are rising above mudslinging while actually doing no such thing. That way, you can benefit from disgracing your opponent while at the same time appearing to take the moral high ground. What could be more effective than that?
